A light and fascinating journey to the picturesque plateau of LASSITHI, located in the DIKTI MOUNTAINS, at an altitude of about 800 meters above sea level, takes only a few hours.
At the beginning of the road, a stop is offered at the monastery, named in honor of the miraculous icon of Our Lady KERA KARDIOTISA. The first mention of which refers to 1415.
The history of the monastery speaks of numerous attempts to abduct the holy image, but each time the icon miraculously returned to the island. The monastery preserved not only the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, but also ancient frescoes on the walls of the church of the monastery, so venerated by the believers of the entire Orthodox world.
We continue our trip through the mountain range to the beautiful plateau of LASSITHI shaped like a bowl, framed by the mountain Dikti. Windmills that have irrigated the fertile land of the plateau are at present a rare and therefore more valuable adornment of this part of the island.
In one of the rocks at an altitude of 1025 m. is located the CAVE of DIKTEON ANDRON, where according to legend, the supreme god of Olympus Zeus was born. Descending to the bottom of the cave, at a depth of 80 m to the right of the small lake - "the fonts of Zeus" you can see the dangling stalactite "mantle of Zeus". Archaeologists have proved that the cave was indeed a sanctuary in ancient times.
