    During the Venetian occupation, work was carried out to divide part of the coast to form the island of Spinalonga. In order to protect the Gulf of MIRABELLO, the Venetians erected a defensive fort on the island of Spinalonga, which we invite you to explore in an excursion program with a professional guide.
    Despite the tragic history of the former leper colony enclosed within the walls of a Venetian fortress, the island of Spinalonga became one of the most popular tourist sites of the Byzantine period.

    The city's name originated from a small 9th ​​century Byzantine church located on the Amudi Peninsula, about two kilometers north of the city center and dedicated to St. Nicholas.
